Do Debating And Group Discussion Worth It?
Nowadays, lots of debating and group discussion competitions are taking place for students and they are being also used in the campus placements. Let’s talk about this debate and group discussion competitions.
First of all, let’s talk about the debate competition. In a debate competition, first of all, a topic is given to the participants then some participants are chosen to say in for the given topic and some are chosen to say against the topic. The first disadvantage of this competition is a participant has to say, according to the choice given to them (for or against the topic) irrespective of their own choice. So, they will have to speak according to the given choice and it may be against their will. And if the topic and the given choice is not according to the participant’s choice, then the participant in the zeal of winning the competition gives very non-related reasons(to the topic) starts arguing about false things and try to show those false things as true. And for this reason, the mind of students gets drifted from reality and solving problems based on reality and students instead of solving problems they try to prove their points right without listening the other person’s point of view. And if they are going to do this then they are going to be very rude persons in their future. To solve a problem a person should hear everyone’s point keep his/her own point and then decide what should be done to solve the problem and I don’t think these debate competitions are helping because no problem can be solved by keeping only your own points and proving them right.
Now let’s talk about group discussion. It is like debating but the difference is that the participants (here the participants are more than 3) are asked to sit around a table, they can say for or against the given topic according to their will. The disadvantage of group discussion is that some of the participants may not get the chance of speaking unlike the debating because in group discussion the participants can speak when they want and this gives rise to an argument between some participants and due to this argument between those participants other participants don’t get the chance to speak. In a group discussion, like debating the participants try to prove their points and to prove their points they can add false points too, and sometimes the participants get out of the topic too, and in the zeal of winning they forget the real purpose of the group discussion. For these disadvantages, I want to suggest that there should not be any round of group discussion for job recruitment unless the job is related to BPO or marketing. For technical jobs, there should be other technical tasks related to the pre-requisite of the job.
