My Memories with Comic Books

My cousin brother had a great collection of Indian comic books. I was introduced to the comic book world by him (my cousin brother). When I was a kid, I used to stay at my cousin’s place on some weekends. Those days were of great fun. Me and my cousins (one sister & one brother, both are elder than me). Those weekends were about my cousins and me playing with a rubber ball, playing video-games, listening to songs and a little bit of studying too.

I got to know what a comic-book is

One day, at my cousin’s place, I noticed a bundle of thin books kept on the bookshelf. Then I asked my brother about the books. My brother said to me, “These are not only books, these are comic books.”  But I had no idea what a comic book is. My brother took out a comic book from the bundle and tried to put some comic book sense into my head. The pictures, the narrations and the dialogues in the comic-books fascinated me a lot. The comic books were about the “Chacha Choudhary and Sabu”, “Cheeku”, “Billu” of Diamond comics and “Naagraj”, “Super commando Dhruv”, “Doga”, etc. of Raj comics. After that day, When I used to visit my cousin’s place, the first thing I used to ask him, “Have you got any new comic book?”

My First Comic-Book

I was crazy for the tv show “Shaktimaan” like the other kids those days. One day, during the show, there was an ad break of Shaktimaan comic books. After seeing that I ran towards my mother and said, “can we have those Shaktimaan comic books shown on the tv?” My mother said, ”Papa is busy in some works now, I would talk to him later then let’s see what happens.” Then the Shaktimaan song on the Tv reached my ears and while running towards the tv I told my mother, “Okay but don’t forget to ask.” Later I had forgotten about the Shaktimaan comic book thing.

I used to love Masala Dosa a lot and now also I love it very much. My father while coming back home from the office used to bring Masala Dosas for all of us (me, my mother and my younger brother). One day, after I had finished my masala Dosa, my father told me, “something was free with the Masala Dosa. Don’t you want to have that?” I thought that it might be a sweet dish or something. After seeing the free thing, my joy knew no bounds. It was a Shaktimaan comic book. It was my first own comic book and I loved everything about it.

My Collection of comic books

Like my cousin brother, I also had the collections of comic books having the characters “Naagraj”, “Dhruv”, “Doga” and Parmanu. My favorites were the ones which had both “Nagraaj” and “Dhruv”. I used to eagerly wait for the next issue of a comic book which was shown on the last page of the same.
Later when I started watching the cartoon series of Batman, Spiderman, and Superman, then I got curious about their comic books too and had some stuff of the Marvel and DC universe. I love the Marvel and DC cartoons and movies a lot but I loved the Indian comic books especially of Raj comics more than of the Marvel & DC because the content and excitement was more in Raj comics (according to me).

My Regret about Comic-books

I have one regret that I had a good collection of comic-books but lost them while shifting my house. I wish I had them with me now  because they would have been a great collection of memories to see and cherish.

At last, I want to say that reading comic books was very much fun for me. As a kid, it was great to go through the conversations in the comic books and getting to know various new stuff. They always give a message that whatever may happen but everything is going to be alright at last and if not then the superheroes inside us (our self-belief) will make everything alright.
